Fugees member sentenced to 14 years for unlawful Obama campaign contributions

Platinum-selling musician Plas has received a prison sentence due to charges tied to unlawful foreign lobbying and conspiracy.

Pras Michel, known for being a part of the popular ’90s group Fugees, has faced years of legal issues over alleged attempts to sway presidential elections and governmental actions.

Earlier, Michel expressed, “There’s a chance I might go in. While I was fighting…”

The Fugees’ 1996 album, “The Score,” which achieved seven times platinum status in the U.S. and hit number one in several countries, marked the last original work from the group.

Michel was indicted back in 2019, with his trial commencing in 2023 after a lengthy delay. Over three weeks, the trial included testimony from actor Leonardo DiCaprio and examined various money laundering schemes associated with Malaysian financier Jho Low, as noted by reports.

The legal issues began when Michel was accused of directing $2 million from Low to Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign, allegedly through the use of straw donors. In a surprising twist, he claimed in 2023 that he only accepted $20 million from Low for a photo shoot with Obama. This was part of a larger $120 million he claimed to have received from Low.

Additionally, prosecutors accused Michel of channeling funds from Low into lobbying efforts aimed at persuading President Trump to halt the investigation into Low in 2019.

Recently, Michel was found guilty of attempting to influence the Trump administration, resulting in an order to forfeit over $64 million.

“Next Chapter”

Erica Dumas, a representative, stated that “Pras has broken barriers throughout his career, and this is not the end of his story. We appreciate all the support as he faces this next chapter.”

Michel has previously indicated he intends to appeal, asserting his “fight” is ongoing and acknowledging the reality that “there’s a possibility I will go. in
