A Furman football player has died two days after suffering an emergency during training.
Defensive end and tackle Bryce Stanfield collapsed during practice at Paladin Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina, and died after being placed on life support at a local hospital.
He was 21 years old.
Furman head coach Clary Hendricks said, “We are heartbroken beyond measure by the sudden passing of Bryce, and first and foremost we would like to express our deepest condolences to his parents, Fred and Terry Stanfield; We ask that you please keep his family in your prayers on this day and in the days to come.” said in a statement.
“There are many others who are truly hurting — specifically Bryce’s teammates, coaches and staff, classmates, friends, and the entire Furman community and beyond. Bryce is outstanding. He was a young man, an equally talented student, football player, and friend. He was deeply involved in who we are as a program and as a school, and is remembered for his success on the football field and his service to the community. Your time commitment has played a vital role in our success.
“In every sense of the word, he was the best representative we could have imagined. His death is one of the most difficult events Furman football has ever faced, but we are grateful for our faith and for what Bryce has given us. The many wonderful memories they have provided will help sustain us all in the days to come.”
According to Fox CarolinaStanfield was dealing with a back issue that limited what he could do before training began, but he was undergoing rehabilitation for that, and the coaching staff was not aware that he had any other medical issues. Ta.
Furman President Elizabeth Davis issued a statement offering her condolences to Stanfield’s family.
“The University extends its deepest sympathies to Mr. Bryce’s family and friends at this time of profound loss.” davis said. “At times like these, the entire Furman community is impacted greatly. It is important that we offer support to each other and seek help when needed.”
In 2021, Stanfield was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman team after recording 19 tackles and three sacks.
In his third season, 2023, he appeared in 13 games, recorded 13 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks, and helped the Paladins win the Southern Conference championship.
He has been a member of the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the past two years.
The school plans to announce plans for a memorial service at a later date.
Davis added that his strong academic work and community outreach have made him a valued member of the Furman community.
“Bryce excelled in the classroom and wanted to attend dental school after Furman,” she wrote. “He was equally brilliant on the soccer field and was loved by his teammates and coaches alike. I loved reading books to children.
“His Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree was awarded this morning in a small private ceremony.”
