Georgia's Republican-controlled elections board passed a resolution requiring election officials to count ballots by hand on election night.

On Friday, the board voted 3-2 to support the change.

Advocates praised the ruling, saying it would ensure every vote was counted accurately.

At a rally last month, President Donald Trump praised the three Republican majority leaders as “pit bulls who fight for honesty.”

But opponents argued that manual counting rules could delay results, exhaust workers, lead to errors and make paper ballots less secure.

The attorney general's office previously warned that the decision to count ballots by hand was “likely illegal.”

The Board of Elections rejected the early voting hand-ballot votes by a 4-1 vote.
