Former President Obama Faces Renewed Scrutiny in Russian Election Interference Claims
Journalist Matt Taibbi recently remarked that former President Obama is now “squarely” in the spotlight concerning the alleged Russian influence in the 2016 election. This comes after Tulsi Gabbard’s office released a significant amount of documents detailing the narrative surrounding the Trump-Russia collusion.
According to Taibbi, an unnamed source indicated that Obama is stepping out from being just a background figure in this ongoing controversy. His insights were shared on Monday’s episode of “American Newsroom.”
Interestingly, officials from Obama’s administration have acknowledged that there is no “empirical evidence” supporting the Trump-Russia collusion theory, as outlined in the House Intelligence Committee transcript.
As Taibbi noted, the latest revelations suggest that key figures like John Brennan and James Comey are currently under criminal investigation by the Department of Justice. He added that Gabbard’s newly released documents appear intended to clarify the matters surrounding the election meddling. “We now have a much clearer understanding regarding Trump and Russia,” he told co-host Bill Hemmer.
Recently, Gabbard declassified documents that purportedly involve Obama and his national security team. This intelligence was initially aimed at reinforcing narratives that Russia attempted to disrupt the 2016 presidential election.
One of the declassified documents, a Presidential Daily Brief from December 8, 2016, obtained by Fox News Digital, concluded that “Russia and its operatives did not affect the recent US election results” despite engaged in malicious cyber activities against election infrastructure.
While Russian officials attempted to compromise voting systems in various states, Obama’s team looked into these documents closely during their investigations.
A bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee investigation ultimately found that while there was some level of Russian interference, Trump did not appear to have sought their assistance.
Marco Rubio, who was then the committee chairman and now serves as the US diplomatic head under Trump, stated, “The committee found no evidence that Donald Trump or his campaign colluded with the Russian government to meddle in the 2016 election.”
Taibbi has heard frustrations regarding the timing of Gabbard’s document releases. He quoted former Trump officials who felt those documents should have surfaced earlier due to the corruption issues. “It’s a relief to see them come out now, and there’s anticipation about what else might be disclosed this week,” he shared.
So far, Obama and his representatives have not provided comments on these developments. Meanwhile, Democrats have responded vocally, with Rep. Jim Himes criticizing Gabbard’s claims as “basically unfounded.”
Himes pointed out that the intelligence community had consistently investigated claims of Russian interference going back to 2016. Additionally, he noted that all legitimate inquiries, including those by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, found no indications of politicization and validated the conclusions of the 2016 Intelligence Community Assessment.
In a more pointed response, Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat and ranking member on the Senate Intelligence Committee, accused Gabbard of using her platform to amplify conspiracy theories related to the election.
