Gal Gadot Discusses “Snow White” and Backlash
Gal Gadot recently shared her thoughts on a celebrity under pressure regarding Israel, which she feels impacted the recent box office performance of “Snow White.”
On her Instagram story, she mentioned, “I was honored to be part of an extraordinary interview with an inspiring interviewer.” She went on to explain her experience during the film’s release, noting that critics who opposed Israel reacted to her comments in a very personal and visceral manner.
The actress, who is Israeli, expressed, “They saw me first and foremost as Israeli people, not as actresses,” which highlighted how her identity influenced their perceptions.
Gadot, at 40 years old, commented that the film’s struggles weren’t solely attributable to external pressure. “There are many factors that determine why a film will succeed or fail, and success is never guaranteed!” she concluded.
In a recent appearance on the Israeli TV show “A Talks,” she shared her insights on why “Snow White” was viewed as a significant failure.
“I was sure the film would be a huge hit. Then it happened,” she reflected, referring to the attack by Hamas on October 7, which she believed added more pressure on celebrities regarding their views on Israel.
“I can always explain and try to give context, but ultimately, people make their own decisions,” she explained further, acknowledging the complexities involved.
Gadot expressed disappointment that the film’s potential wasn’t realized, saying, “That’s how you go. You win some, you lose some.”
While portraying the evil Queen in the film, she and Rachel Zegler, who played Snow White, faced controversy during production and promotion. The film grossed $205.5 million against a production budget of $240-$270 million.
Initially, fans criticized Disney for casting Zegler, a Latina, in the role of Snow White. The backlash intensified when Zegler expressed that the plot felt outdated, further complicating the film’s reception.
Gadot, an outspoken supporter of Israel, has faced backlash on social media, which led her to increase her security after receiving threats.
In March, pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian protests notably disrupted a Hollywood Walk of Fame Ceremony, reflecting the ongoing tensions surrounding these issues.
