Proposed Changes for Illegal Immigrant Assistance
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently offering $1,000 to undocumented migrants who opt for self-deportation through the CBP Home App. In response, Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona has suggested an alternative approach, proposing that instead of simply paying a fine, these individuals could be granted a work visa.
“Why would you make them pay a $5,000 fine, conduct background checks, and then give them a work visa for a few years that can be renewed with good behavior?” Gallego questioned during a recent discussion. He has also mentioned, in another post, that immigrants could be responsible for their own background checks.
DHS Financial Proposal
There’s a potential strategy from DHS that could financially benefit those who opt for self-deportation. Their goal is to provide a safe and viable option. This option is particularly relevant as the Trump administration is increasing its focus on reducing illegal immigration and enhancing deportation processes.
According to a DHS statement, “Illegal aliens who utilize the CBP Home App for self-deportation will receive a $1,000 incentive, which will be disbursed after they return to their home country.” This initiative, even with the financial incentives, is estimated to save about 70% in deportation costs, which currently average around $17,121 for arresting, detaining, and deporting undocumented immigrants.
The DHS has also mentioned that travel assistance will be provided for those returning home. They indicated that initial travel aid efforts have been met with success, with recent reports of undocumented migrants booking tickets to flights from cities like Chicago to Honduras.
