Gang leader in Chicago reportedly promised $10K for killing immigration agent

Federal Agent Arrested in Chicago for Alleged Gang Involvement

A federal agent in Chicago was taken into custody on Monday for allegedly leading a faction of the Latin Kings. This group is reportedly linked to a plot offering cash rewards for the assassination of a senior immigration officer involved in Operation Midway Blitz.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois has filed charges against 37-year-old Juan Espinoza Martinez but hasn’t sealed the case. His initial court appearance has yet to be scheduled.

U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Butros described the alleged conspiracy as “an assault on the rule of law.” He emphasized that putting a price on the lives of law enforcement officials undermines public safety and the justice system.

Martinez is said to be a high-ranking member of the Latin Kings, a gang infamous for violent crime and drug trafficking across Chicago. The allegations include a Snapchat message from Martinez, reportedly stating “2k to 2k when you get him” and “10k if you take him down.”

The complaint details how Martinez identified himself as “monkey” and “juan” while sharing images of senior border patrol officers engaged in immigration enforcement as part of Operation Midway Blitz.

After a violent altercation involving Border Patrol agents in Chicago’s Brighton Park area on October 4, investigators say Martinez ordered his associates to react, including arming themselves and patrolling areas to safeguard Latin Kings territory.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche noted that this arrest reflects a renewed focus on addressing gang violence. He stated, “Placing a bounty on federal officers is an attack on the rule of law and every American who depends on law enforcement for safety.”

The weekend prior to the arrest was marked by brutality in Chicago, with multiple shootings and clashes reported, resulting in numerous casualties. Among the incidents was the fatal shooting of Marimar Martinez and the arrest of Anthony Ian Santos Lewis.

According to police reports, a total of 22 shootings occurred between Friday evening and Sunday night, leading to 29 injuries and four fatalities.
