Attorney General Merrick Garland acknowledged that he “worries” every day about the possibility of a terrorist attack on the United States and warned that the “threat level has increased significantly” since October 7.
Garland made his concerns known before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday when asked whether President Biden’s disastrous border policies have allowed millions of migrants to enter the U.S., posing an increased threat.
“Since Oct. 7, we have been concerned about the possibility of a domestic terrorist attack. The threat level against us has increased significantly,” he testified.
“We worry about this question every morning, trying to track down those who may be trying to harm our country.
“Obviously, this is a top priority for the Department of Justice,” he added.
FBI Director Christopher Wray issued a similar warning hours earlier, telling a Senate Appropriations subcommittee that it is “hard to recall a time when so many threats to public safety and national security have been elevated at one time.” According to CBS News.
Wray told Congress on Tuesday that the ongoing conflict in Gaza has raised threats to the United States to a “whole other level” and that anti-Semitism and hate crimes have also increased.
Garland later acknowledged a “horrific explosion of anti-Semitic threats” since the start of the Israel-Hamas war. According to Axios.
“There are also anti-Arab and anti-Muslim threats in this country that frighten all of these communities,” he said. “We believe that preventing, investigating, prosecuting and stopping those threats is an important component of our civil rights work.”
