LSU Quarterback’s Narrow Escape in Game Against Alabama
During a recent game, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier dodged a severe neck injury after a tough tackle that twisted his head while wearing a face mask. The Tigers faced No. 4 Alabama and ended up losing 20-9 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
This unsettling moment unfolded early in the third quarter when Crimson Tide lineman Jordan Renaud, while attempting a tackle, yanked Nussmeier’s helmet off his head in a rough manner.
Nussmeier managed to stand up quickly and continued playing, appearing unfazed despite the alarming incident. “We lost our helmets, and all the officials were throwing flags everywhere,” said ABC’s play-by-play announcer Sean McDonough, amid the mayhem.
In response to the replay, color commentator Greg McElroy remarked, “That was just violent. His head kept tilting to the side. That’s something else.”
Despite these challenges, Nussmeier had a decent performance, completing 18 out of 21 passes for 121 yards. Yet, he struggled under pressure, ultimately leading to his being benched late in the third quarter for sophomore Michael Van Buren Jr.
This quarterback change was a daring choice by interim head coach Frank Wilson, who has been in charge since the firing of Brian Kelly last month after nearly four years. After the game, he expressed that Nussmeier had shown promise at the start but felt it was time to switch things up to shake the defense of Alabama.
However, the move didn’t pay off. Van Buren threw 5 passes successfully out of 11 but only gained a mere 52 yards, failing to score any touchdowns. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they couldn’t overcome Alabama and extended their losing streak to three games.
Looking ahead, LSU aims to turn things around when they host the University of Arkansas on November 15.
