Garrett Wilson’s Big Payday
Garrett Wilson is now sitting pretty with a hefty $130 million extension from the Jets, a deal spanning four years that he inked on Monday. Reflecting on this milestone, Wilson shared his appreciation for the security it provides while acknowledging the ups and downs leading to this moment.
“Yeah, Jets Green has been in my blood since they drafted me,” he expressed on X.
Wilson kicked off his career with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, despite the team’s struggles, including a 19-32 record and a parade of quarterbacks. After last season, rumors swirled about Wilson potentially wanting out, as he tended to deflect questions about his future.
However, everything shifted when the Jets welcomed a new management team, including GM Darren Mooey and head coach Aaron Glenn. They swapped Aaron Rodgers for former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, which seemed to reignite Wilson’s enthusiasm. In May, he voiced his aspiration to be a “Jet for life.”
This extension effectively keeps Wilson with the team until 2030, paving the way for more significant earnings during his prime years.
“I’m really excited. This is just the start of something new,” he told NFL reporter Jocina Anderson, emphasizing that the deal alleviates financial worries. “You don’t want that kind of pressure weighing on you.”
Wilson is deeply thankful for the faith shown in him by the coaching staff. “Even after just 20 wins, I recognize what this means,” he admitted. “I’m focused now on building team chemistry and playing for something bigger.”
The Jets are gearing up for training camp next week, and negotiations concerning cornerback Source Gardner are also expected to heat up. Both players were top ten draft picks in 2022, so they share a crucial role in the team’s foundation.
