Garth Hudson, Master Instrumentalist and Last Surviving Member of The Band, Dies at 87

Jan. 21 (UPI) — Garth Hudson, the last surviving member of The Band, has died.

He died Tuesday morning in his sleep at a nursing home in New York, media reported. Mr. Hudson was 87 years old.

The group began as backup musicians for Ronnie Hawkins (Levon and the Hawks) and then Bob Dylan, and released their own album in 1968. The group included Robbie Robertson, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, and Levon Helm of Hudson.

The Band has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1994.

The group's social media pages included tributes to the late musician.

“Garth, a musical genius and the foundation of the group's timeless sound, once said, “I found real joy in helping people get to the root of their emotions.'' . He accomplished just that through his music,” the obituary reads. “It helps us all feel deeper and connect to something bigger. Rest assured, Garth.”

The post includes photos of Hudson playing various instruments over the years.
