Gary Sanchez Rewinds the Clock with Orioles
Gary Sanchez was a staple for the Yankees during his six seasons there. On Friday night, he gave fans a glimpse into that past. His contributions were significant, helping the Orioles to a 5-3 victory, which continues to highlight the Yankees’ ongoing struggles.
In the first inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, Sanchez hit a crucial 2-2 pitch into left field, driving in two runs. Later, his single was part of a rally that allowed the Orioles to tie the game at three runs apiece.
“It feels good to be back here after spending so many years,” Sanchez shared through a translator. “I know this stadium well, and it feels really comfortable to play here.”
Sanchez emphasized that the victory was important, stating, “We got a win, and that’s what matters, regardless of who the opponent is.”
Since departing from the Yankees after the 2021 season, Sanchez has been with several teams, including the Twins, Mets, Padres, and Brewers. He has had a season marked more by ups and downs rather than the power he was known for during his time with the Yankees.
After Friday’s game, his batting line improved to .205/.294/.341 with a .635 OPS, which isn’t particularly strong, but it was a moment of impact against his former teammates.
“I think every time I come back, it feels pretty normal,” he noted. “I like playing here. The visibility of the ball is great, and the stadium is really nice.”
As he stepped up to bat for the first time, there were boos from the crowd. Still, Sanchez was in the zone. “I was focused on that at-bat,” he explained. “I’m trying to concentrate on what I need to do, not really paying attention to the noise.”
