Coco Gauff Wins Second Grand Slam Title at French Open
Coco Gauff claimed her second Grand Slam title by triumphing over top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the French Open final with a score of 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4. This win comes after her previous championship at the 2023 US Open, where she also defeated Sabalenka.
The match was quite competitive, with both players facing challenges from the winds on the clay courts of Roland Garros. After losing the first set in a tiebreak, Gauff came back strong in the second set, maintaining her momentum through to the third set, which was marked by tension but ultimately led to her victory.
Before this match, Sabalenka had an impressive season. She entered the tournament as the world’s top player, boasting significant points according to the WTA rankings. However, Gauff’s victory may change the rankings following this match.
In the beginning, Gauff served first and seemed in control initially. Nevertheless, Sabalenka managed to break her early and then broke again in Gauff’s following service game. A series of five breaks occurred before they reached a 6-6 tie. Sabalenka struggled during her service game, which set the stage for the tiebreak.
The tiebreak was tightly contested, but Sabalenka edged out Gauff 7-6 (5) to take the first set. However, Gauff dominated the second set with a 6-2 score, winning 63% of her first serves compared to Sabalenka’s lower percentages. This performance set her up well for the deciding set.
The third set saw Gauff break early, but Sabalenka responded by breaking back, keeping things close for a while. As the set wore on, it seemed like Sabalenka was showing signs of fatigue. Gauff served at 5-4 and managed to maintain her focus, securing a historic win.
Heading into the match, Gauff and Sabalenka had fairly even records against each other, each boasting five wins in their ten meetings. Their previous significant match was during the 2023 US Open final, where Gauff also emerged victorious.
During the French Open, Sabalenka had reached the semi-finals without dropping a single set before facing the fifth seed, Iga Świątek. She lost one set there but regained her footing to win the match decisively in the third set.
Before reaching the finals, Sabalenka defeated several seeded opponents, including 16th seed Amanda Anisimova and 8th seed Qinwen Zheng. Gauff, on the other hand, navigated the tournament with fewer challenges, only dropping a set in the quarterfinals against Madison Keys.
The men’s final at the French Open is set for Sunday, featuring top seeds Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
