NHL Player Charged with Assault

Gavin McKenna, an 18-year-old standout for the Penn State Nittany Lions ice hockey team, has been charged with assault following an incident over the weekend.

The charges were officially filed on Wednesday, alleging that McKenna committed a felony count of aggravated assault. This charge stems from accusations that he intended to cause serious bodily injury or, alternatively, acted with extreme negligence resulting in bodily harm. In addition to the aggravated assault, he faces charges of simple assault, harassment, and disorderly conduct related to the event.

Officials from Pennsylvania mentioned, “We are aware that charges have been filed, but as this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not be commenting further.”

The altercation reportedly took place in downtown State College after a game against Michigan State at Beaver Stadium, where McKenna had scored a goal, although his team lost 5-4. Witnesses stated that he was with friends and family at a bar when he allegedly assaulted another individual, which resulted in the victim suffering a broken jaw.

The State University Police Department has not yet provided a comment on the matter.

McKenna is being viewed as a potential top pick in the upcoming 2026 NHL Draft. He has had a successful run in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers before transitioning to NCAA hockey. Last season, he netted 41 goals and provided 88 assists in 56 games with the Tigers. He has also represented Canada in the World Junior U-20 Championships, showcasing impressive stats in each tournament.

Currently, McKenna is waiting for a preliminary hearing regarding the charges against him.
