During a presidential debate, Biden froze mid-sentence while discussing raising federal taxes on wealthy people and corporations, and he also lied about no U.S. troops being killed while overseeing a disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Newsom has frequently been mentioned as a leading candidate to succeed Biden, but concerns about the president’s age and health have raised doubts in recent months about whether he will seek reelection. Other names that have been floated are Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Vice President Kamala Harris.
