California Governor Gavin Newsom attempted to capitalize on the BTS phenomenon, but responses online were less than favorable.
In a social media update on Saturday, Newsom expressed excitement over the South Korean group’s performances in the state, where they are scheduled to play several shows at Stanford Stadium as part of their Arirang World Tour.
“Three sold-out shows in California can only mean one thing: @BTS_Bighit is coming to town,” Newsom posted from his official account, welcoming them with the message, “Welcome to the Golden State!” He even added a purple heart emoji—often associated with BTS—and a gesture known as “finger heart,” popular in South Korea.
The tweet included a picture of the band with a California flag.
However, many on social media didn’t see the humor in it.
Influencer Tiffany Fong, who focuses on cryptocurrency, questioned Newsom’s motives and even asked, “Are you a teenage girl?”
Others highlighted that while welcoming BTS was nice, there are bigger issues—like California’s ongoing homelessness crisis—that need addressing. One user pointedly remarked, “Hope these guys don’t get robbed or assaulted while they’re here?” Another quipped, “Try not to step on homeless people or fentanyl on your way to the arena.”
Another commenter brought up California’s steep tax rates, asking, “How much tax do they have to pay?”
One user was particularly critical, stating, “This??? Is this what matters to you? Your state is a dumpster fire and you’re playing the ‘fanboy.’ You are such a pathetic little man.”
Newsom has previously dismissed criticism of California as “California Derangement Syndrome.” The state is currently investing nearly $20 million to enhance its image.
BTS, aside from their performances this weekend in the Bay Area, is set to return to California later this year, performing at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium from September 1 to 6.
