Gavin Newsom responds to threats of arrest from the Trump administration

Newsom Discusses Potential Arrest Amid Immigration Tensions

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently shared his thoughts on a hypothetical situation involving his arrest by the Trump administration during immigration protests in Los Angeles. In a podcast interview, Newsom revealed that he and his team had discussed what it would mean if a federal warrant was issued for his arrest.

“What’s absurd is that I actually contemplated this,” Newsom stated, reflecting on the implications of such a conversation in the current political climate. He expressed concern that the very fact they were discussing this in 2025 illustrates the state of affairs in the White House.

Following this, Newsom addressed the possibility of his arrest in a separate interview with the Washington Post, suggesting that his relationship with Trump had deteriorated significantly. “He threatened my arrest. I assume that’s part of the situation,” he remarked. He also expressed his ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable communities facing authoritarian threats.

Trump’s former immigration chief, Tom Homan, had previously suggested that Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass could be arrested if they obstructed federal deportation efforts. In response, Newsom challenged Homan, suggesting he should carry out the arrest if he dared.

When Trump was asked about the arrest threat, he remarked that Newsom’s major offenses included his poor handling of California’s issues, likening it to running for governor under unfortunate circumstances.

Newsom expressed his disappointment over Trump’s comments, pointing out that such rhetoric signals a move toward authoritarianism.

In the midst of rising tensions, Homan seemed to moderate his stance slightly, stating that arrests would depend on whether Newsom and Bass crossed legal lines. “They haven’t crossed the line yet, but any citizen can be prosecuted for crimes against ICE officers,” he clarified.

Amid the controversy, Newsom’s management of various state issues, including recent wildfires, has drawn Trump’s ire. The two leaders remain at odds, particularly with Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops to California, which Newsom argues infringes on the state’s sovereignty. He claimed that most troops were not actively aiding public safety but were merely sidelined.

“This isn’t about keeping the public safe,” Newsom said in a social media post. “It’s more about appeasing the president’s ego.”
