Newsom Calls for Attention to Men’s Issues
California’s Governor Gavin Newsom, in a recent interview, urged fellow Democrats to take a closer look at what he termed a masculinity crisis. He suggested that party members need to “compromise on their own” when it comes to addressing the challenges facing men and boys today.
Newsom expressed that the Democratic party has somewhat sidestepped this pressing issue, allowing it to be exploited by figures like former President Trump. “Trump saw this as a chance during elections, but frankly, he hasn’t delivered any concrete solutions to really tackle the concerns out there,” he said during a conversation on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
In his discussion with host Jake Tapper, he highlighted alarming statistics: suicide rates, dropout figures, and suspension rates for males have all skyrocketed. “We have to face this as a party,” he asserted. “From an electoral viewpoint, we simply cannot lose touch with these individuals. But addressing this shouldn’t compromise our values—it’s essential for women too; they need better men around them.”
Newsom also pointed to Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, and mentioned how he understood the frustrations of young people. “Some Democrats were unfamiliar with Kirk’s work. I told them, ‘Your son probably knows who he is,'” Newsom said, referring to Kirk, who was tragically killed during a campus event in September.
In a prior conversation on a podcast, Newsom and Kirk found common ground when discussing the issue of biological males competing in women’s sports. Kirk posed a question to Newsom: “As governor, should you take a stand against this?”
Reflecting on broader democratic challenges, Newsom expressed concern that the party has been slow to recognize the plight of men. He emphasized, “This is a vital issue—not just in politics but also in our families, relationships, and cultural fabric.”
