If your plan is to make cars more expensive for everyone, you'll end up doing exactly what Governor Gavin Newsom is doing with extreme emissions regulations.
“It doesn't matter where you live,” says Jill Savage of Blaze News Tonight. “We're talking about impossible quotas, huge fines for automakers, and even a new gas tax. Drivers will be furious.”
Automotive expert and journalist Lauren Fix is also not keen on the plan.
“There's a lot going on,” she tells Savage and Matthew Peterson. “Currently, California has a mandate from the California Air Resources Board that by 2026, 35% of all vehicles sold in California will be all electric vehicles.”
“It will be all-electric by 2030,” she continues. “Gasoline-powered vehicles will not be allowed to be sold in the state, which would be a problem given the highest electricity rates in the country.”
But things get even worse.
“Every vehicle currently sold is subject to a $20,000 fine for not meeting California Air Resources Board standards,” Fix explains. “That means every manufacturer is paying a $20,000 loss for every car sold.”
Starting early this year, California will also add a 68-cent tax to every car sold.
“That would make it even more expensive. So the idea is to encourage people to get rid of their gas cars, but then they have car payments, they have high insurance premiums, and there's nowhere to file a claim,” Fix said. He noted that California is not the only state affected.
“It's actually going to impact the whole country because automakers aren't going to make cars just for California. They're going to make cars for the whole country,” she explained. do.
Seventeen states, including New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, are naturally siding with California, but Fix believes Trump can stop them.
“If I had his ear, I would tell him to go after the California Air Resources Board and disband them, because President Obama gave them even more power. No matter what you say, the whole country is forced to follow suit,” Fix said.
“Car manufacturers cannot afford billions of dollars in fines. Instead, they are losing millions of dollars and we are all paying the price,” she added. .
