General Manager updates on Travis Kelce as uncertainty surrounds the tight end's future

Travis Kelce’s Future as a Free Agent: What to Expect

There’s a bit of suspense surrounding Travis Kelce as he heads toward free agency. The tight end for the Chiefs hasn’t said much about whether he’ll continue playing in 2026 or consider retirement. Recently, general manager Brett Veach hinted at a possible return, which might ease some concerns.

“Travis is the best. He’s an icon… We just go through the process,” Veach remarked, which, you know, sounds pretty reassuring.

That’s a shift from earlier comments by team owners who were very eager to keep him on board. Clark Hunt mentioned back in January that they wanted to respect Kelce’s personal life—he’s had a busy offseason with his engagement and marriage. “But we definitely want him back,” Hunt said.

It was rumored earlier that Kelce is technically not under contract with the Chiefs but is expected to play football next season. It seems like there’s a chance he’ll be back.

Kelce has built a remarkable career with the Chiefs, securing three Super Bowl titles, all while watching Patrick Mahomes transform from a backup into a superstar player.

At 36, he’s had an impressive seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons from 2016 to 2022. If he does decide to retire, he’s likely a first-ballot Hall of Famer, without a doubt.

Last season, he rushed for 851 yards and secured five touchdowns, placing him among the top 10 tight ends in the league. Given his star power, boosted further by his relationship with Taylor Swift, he could command a significant salary if he returns.

However, it’s worth noting that his numbers might be affected in 2026, especially since Mahomes tore his ACL last December and could miss the start of the season. That’s a big deal, obviously.

Moreover, the Chiefs are facing challenges with the salary cap—currently $10 million over, even after Mahomes made a big sacrifice to help with team finances.

There’s also chatter about former Kansas City star Tyreek Hill, who was recently released by the Dolphins, potentially joining the Chiefs again.
