Geno Smith Apologizes for Gesture to Fans Following Raiders’ Loss
After the Raiders suffered a defeat against the Browns, quarterback Geno Smith took a moment to express his regret over a gesture he made while exiting the field. The incident, where Smith was seen jogging away from the game and giving a middle finger to a fan, quickly spread across social media.
Reflecting on his actions, Smith described them as “poor judgment” and acknowledged that he “has to be better.” He reached out to fans and specifically Raider Nation during a press conference, saying, “I would like to apologize… I made a poor decision out of frustration, and that’s no excuse. I had to be better than that and hold myself to a higher standard. In that moment, I didn’t. I sincerely apologize and am very sorry that I did what I did.”
Smith also added, “I just want to let you know that nothing like that will ever happen to me again.”
This latest game marked the Raiders’ fifth consecutive loss, with a score of 24-10, and saw Smith getting sacked ten times—a performance that understandably annoyed many fans who had already expressed their discontent before the game.
In terms of statistics, Smith completed the match with 285 passing yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, the Raiders organization issued a statement reacting to Smith’s actions: “We regret his actions and have discussed the matter with Geno. We have the utmost respect for Raider Nation and take this matter seriously.”
Smith’s performance this season hasn’t mirrored the success he enjoyed during his tenure in Seattle, where he had impressive stats and even earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2022 and 2023.
Interestingly, Smith isn’t the only Raiders player to have faced backlash from fans recently. Earlier in the season, Maxx Crosby was also spotted making an inappropriate gesture towards a fan during the preseason.
Looking ahead, the Raiders will be hoping to turn their fortunes around when they go up against the Chargers this Sunday.
