Geno Smith Returns as Jets Captain
Geno Smith is back in familiar territory as he prepares to take the field as the Jets’ quarterback this Sunday. He will don the captain’s patch, having been voted as one of six team captains by his peers.
“I’ve told the guys that wearing that captain’s patch means a lot to me,” Smith mentioned on Tuesday. “There are so many teammates who could’ve easily taken that role. For me, it’s about leading properly and performing when it counts because I’m representing everyone else.”
He added, “When they chose me for this, it truly meant a lot to both me and my family.”
Joining Smith as captains are right guard Joe Tippmann, linebacker Demario Davis, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, and return specialist Isaiah Williams.
A bit surprisingly, star receiver Garrett Wilson wasn’t chosen again this year after serving as a captain last season. When asked about this, Wilson maintained a diplomatic tone.
“I wouldn’t say I’m upset about it,” he said. “It’s more about recognizing that we have a great group of guys who all deserve that title. They bring so much value to the team and really help us prepare for games and practices. I’m just happy to have them leading, and I’ll do my best to play my role.”
Running back Breece Hall appears to be recovering well from a right groin strain. Coach Aaron Glenn expressed optimism that Hall might play against the Titans this Sunday.
“He’s making progress and seems likely to play,” Glenn remarked.
Hall injured his groin on August 17 but participated in practice drills on Tuesday after Glenn indicated the starting running back would be practicing this week.
Glenn has yet to name the starting kicker for the upcoming game. Bailey Grupe, recently signed from the Colts, is on the active roster, while Jason Sanders remains on the practice squad. The Jets brought in Grupe when Sanders struggled in the preseason, missing an extra point and a long field goal attempt.
“I’ve said before that I’m not worried about that situation. Both guys are capable, and we just need to decide on one to be our kicker,” Glenn explained.
On the injury front, edge rusher Joseph Ossai is still considered day-to-day, and it seems unlikely he will be ready to play this Sunday.
