Geno Smith’s Challenges with Law Enforcement Continue

Geno Smith’s offseason has been eventful, particularly in interaction with law enforcement. Recently, he was stopped by the Davie Police in Florida for allegedly speeding on July 6, driving a 2025 Aston Martin in a 45 mph zone.

In footage from the stop, the officer commented on the car, mentioning, “It’s a beautiful car.” However, he then informed Smith that he was driving at 70 mph, which was too fast for the zone. When asked for his license and registration, Smith noted that he didn’t have them with him since the car was registered to a friend.

He explained that his licenses were back at his house. After taking down his information, the officer reminded Smith to keep his identification with him, to which Smith responded, “That’s too bad.”

The officer issued two tickets: one for operating a vehicle without a license and another for speeding.

This incident marks the third encounter Smith has had with the Davie police this offseason. Earlier, in April, he was driving a Rolls Royce with improper tags and had a notable exchange captured on body camera footage when told there was “no tag assigned to the vehicle.” Smith had responded by telling the officer to “do more work.”

In a more serious matter, a June incident involved a woman alleging on social media that Smith disliked taking care of her special needs child, further complicating his situation. Police were called to his home, but no arrests were made, and Smith wasn’t charged.

Now preparing for his 13th NFL season and fifth with the Jets, Smith’s journey has been tumultuous. His initial time in New York had its challenges; after starting for two seasons, he faced a setback in 2015 when he was injured by a teammate during a locker room incident.

However, after his time with the Seahawks—where he had the opportunity to revitalize his career and even earn a Pro Bowl selection—Smith made his way back to New York. He experienced a less than stellar season with the Raiders before returning to the Jets.

As Smith looks ahead, it’s clear that while his off-field encounters have been rocky, his on-field journey has evolved significantly.
