Conservative commentators George Conway and Scott Jennings got into a heated debate Friday morning over the ruling in former President Trump’s hush money trial and other legal battles.
Conway, once a Trump ally but now a vocal critic, tried in her CNN interview to prove her point that Trump is not a victim by highlighting the actions the former president has taken and the consequences he now faces. Her comments sparked shouting matches and accusations of lying between the two commentators, with the hosts stepping in to defuse the heated exchange.
The on-air exchange came a day after Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in his Manhattan hush money trial.
“If you don’t want to be held accountable for rape, like Donald Trump was, then don’t grab a woman’s genitals. If you don’t want to be held accountable for degrading the woman you raped, then stop lying about what you did and calling her a freak,” Conway said in the interview.
“If you don’t want to be charged with subverting the constitution, don’t commit suicide bombings. If you don’t want to be charged with stealing classified documents and obstructing justice, don’t take them back when the government asks for them,” he added in his remarks. Highlighted by Mediaite.
The GOP lawyer, who argues that the Republican Party is showing “moral corruption,” continued, “This isn’t that hard to say. Donald Trump is not the victim here. Donald Trump… is doing all of this himself.”
When CNN anchor Casey Hunt asked Jennings about the state of the Republican Party, she said she didn’t agree with “a lot” of Conway’s points.
“He’s talking about crimes that were allegedly committed, and apparently the reason a lot of anti-MAGA Republicans are angry is because there is no underlying crime,” Jennings countered.
Republican commentators pressed the group on what Trump’s crimes were, saying Republicans were questioning how the former president could defend himself in the situation. Jennings compared Trump’s behavior after the verdict to his behavior after the Senate held hearings focused on sexual assault allegations against then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
“All factions of the party were extremely angry about what was done to Kavanaugh,” he said in an interview. “I feel the same thing is happening now, and that’s why I think this is probably going to backfire politically for Democrats and they’re going to regret it.”
Conway sighed and shook his head in disagreement.
“I mean, you know, Scott is lying. That’s the problem with the Republican Party,” he said. “The Republican Party is addicted to lying constantly.”
Jennings interrupted, asking what the critic was accusing of lying.
“You’re lying. You’re lying, Scott. You’re lying about the law. You’re lying about what the jury was instructed to find,” Conway responded. “The jury didn’t have to find an underlying crime. They had to find an intent to cover up and an underlying crime. And the underlying crime was very clear.”
Jennings again interjected, asking, “What was the crime?”
“Scott, you ran for public office. As a candidate, you should know that you can’t take money from someone and then pay it back,” Conway said. “You should be well aware of that.”
Jennings said he has never run for public office, to which Conway replied, “Well, close enough.”
“That’s the problem with the Republican Party. They’re full of lies,” he added. “I don’t know why this network is paying Scott to tell those lies.”
Mr Hunt interjected, saying “Woah”, and urged Mr Conway to treat Mr Jennings with respect.
