Lawyer and political commentator George Conway said Monday that former President Trump was benefiting politically from his New York hush money trial, in part by diverting attention from his rallies.
“Actually, if you look at this politically, in my judgment this is helping him politically… It prevents him from going on TV and saying crazy things like he did the other day in Wildwood. “I’m here,” Conway said on CNN’s live coverage of Trump’s trial, referring to his rally in New Jersey over the weekend.
Conway said he hopes CNN “and every other network” will continue to broadcast live coverage of Trump’s New Jersey rally “so everyone can see how crazy he is.” he said.
“This serves him politically by drawing attention away from his strange behavior,” Conway continued. “I think things will change if there’s an eventual conviction, but I don’t think it necessarily hurts him politically at this point.”
President Trump is accused of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments he made to adult film actresses before and after the 2016 election.
The former president, a front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and his allies say the charges against him in New York are political in nature and have vowed to prevent him from running for re-election this fall. He said that it is the purpose.
