George Conway: Trump libeled Carroll again on CNBC

Conservative legal commentator George Conway said former President Trump disparaged advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in a CNBC interview, calling her “Miss Bergdorf Goodman” and referring to him. He said he accused him of making false accusations.

In an interview Monday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” President Trump avoided using Carroll’s name directly, saying, “Miss Bergdorf Goodman, someone I’ve never met. I don’t know who she is. I don’t know at all,” he said.

Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with the $91.63 million bail he had to pay Friday in the defamation case against Carroll, adding, “Except for one thing.” I was sued. From that point on, I was like, “Wow, that’s crazy.” What is this. I have been charged. I was wrongly convicted and had to pay $91 million in bail. ”

In January, a federal jury in New York found Trump guilty of defaming advice columnist Carroll in 2019, denying Carroll’s claims that he was sexually assaulted by the former president decades ago. ordered to pay $10,000.

Another jury found Trump responsible for sexually abusing Carroll last year, and the former president was fined $5.5 million in cash. President Trump’s reference to Bergdorf Goodman was a nod to the department store where Carroll said a sexual assault took place decades ago.

In a Monday post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Conway emphasized the importance of President Trump’s remarks on New York-based CNBC.

“The fact that Trump slandered @ejeancarroll on @CNBC @SquawkCNBC is extremely important for procedural as well as substantive reasons,” Conway wrote on X.

“If E. Jean were to sue Mr. Trump solely for the speech he gave in northwest Georgia the other day, she would likely have to file in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.” , he added, referring to similar accusations made by Trump. At a rally in Georgia last weekend.

“But because he defamed her at the Manhattan-based squawk box, she could probably file a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York,” Conway said. “If she does so, this case will be assigned to Judge Lewis A. Kaplan as a related case to two previous cases that resulted in $88.3 million in damages.”

Robbie Kaplan, Carroll’s lawyer, issued a statement to the New York Times saying they are closely monitoring Trump’s comments and have not ruled out filing a new defamation lawsuit. .

“In most jurisdictions, the statute of limitations for defamation is one to three years. “We continue to monitor all comments made,” he said in a statement. read.

President Trump posted $91.63 million bail (110% of damages, as is standard practice) in Carroll’s defamation suit on Friday, but hours later a judge moved to delay Monday’s looming deadline. His latest attempt was rejected.
