George Ford leads Sale to a convincing victory over playoff competitors Bristol

Sale’s Dominance Secures Playoff Push

The match was portrayed as a crucial playoff showdown, though it may have been slightly overstated. Nonetheless, the stakes were high as both sides aimed for top-four finishes.

Alex Sanderson’s team was impressive on home ground. With a performance fueled by George Ford’s standout display, they secured their 26th win in 29 Premiership matches at Salford since the beginning of the 2022-23 season. It was a thrilling show, highlighted by five tries against one of their closest rivals.

A win in their final game against Exeter will guarantee them a playoff spot for the third year in a row, while Bristol, with its more balanced hopes, awaits in two weeks.

Sanderson reflected on past experiences, recalling a particularly tough match at Exeter a few years back where his team lost 19-0. “I still think about that game sometimes,” he admitted. “But I’m excited about this one. I just have to keep my enthusiasm in check.”

Fortunately for Sale, they faced no injuries to their British and Irish Lions representatives, Tom Curry and Luke Cowan-Dickie. Bristol, on the other hand, named Ellis Genge from Andy Farrell’s squad as a substitute.

Ford’s skillful handling and strategic kicking set the tone early, leading to Dan Du Preez’s try after some great teamwork from Rob Du Preez and Ben Curry.

Bristol, struggling to advance past the Sale’s 22-meter line in the first half, managed to respond unexpectedly when Harry Randall made a break to score against two defenders.

As Sale’s momentum grew, Tad McElroy powered through for another close-range try. Ford added a second conversion, helping Sale maintain a 20-5 lead at halftime. After the break, Bristol fought back, scoring twice thanks to Viliame Mata and Siva Naulago. Yet, Sale answered back with three more tries, solidifying their win.

Johnny Hill, Rekatey Maasi White, and Raffy Quirke each scored to secure a critical victory, showcasing the team’s determination. Quirke especially left his mark with his impressive runs. Bristol managed to score late with contributions from Harry Byrne and Calabitty Lavovaux. Bristol’s coach, Pat Lamb, noted the excitement of the match, praising Ford’s performance. “He’s really on fire now,” he said.
