George Kittle issues a caution to teams interested in Brandon Aiyuk

Brandon Aiyuk’s Ongoing Drama with the 49ers

The situation between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is becoming increasingly tense.

Aiyuk, who signed a four-year contract worth $120 million, has been out of action since October 2024. That’s when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a Week 7 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Things seem to have deteriorated further over the months. Despite being under contract for the 2024 season, Aiyuk missed several rehabilitation sessions in the offseason. This led him to sever all communication with the team, resulting in the voiding of about $27 million in future guarantees.

In January, general manager John Lynch expressed that he believes Aiyuk’s final game with the team has already passed. “It’s unfortunate; things have gone awry,” Lynch remarked. “We’ll reflect on what might have been done differently, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out. I think that’s the case here.”

A recent Instagram post from Aiyuk on Father’s Day hinted at his desire to join the Washington Commanders, making his intentions rather plain, while the situation remains unresolved.

Tight end George Kittle shared his thoughts about Aiyuk’s circumstances during an appearance on the “Pardon My Take” podcast. He mentioned, “The last time I saw Aiyuk was probably Week 6, or maybe Week 7 or 8. I would watch him train early in the morning—I mean, the guy would hit over 32 miles an hour and stop on a dime. He’s still figuring things out, or at least he was 18 months ago, so I really don’t know how things are for him now.”

While Kittle’s remarks were somewhat ambiguous, it’s evident that this situation is affecting the 49ers and their future strategy. Aiyuk has drawn interest from several teams, notably the Washington Commanders, which has connections to both former teammates and college affiliations.

Before his injury, Aiyuk was averaging 58.5 receiving yards per game without scoring any touchdowns, prompting discussions about his overall performance. Regardless of how this unfolds, the saga between Aiyuk and the 49ers might just be one of the toughest player-team conflicts in NFL history.
