Dallas Cowboys’ George Pickens Signs Franchise Tag for 2026
The Dallas Cowboys have confirmed that wide receiver George Pickens has officially signed his franchise tag for the upcoming 2026 season.
This deal guarantees Pickens a substantial $27.3 million for the year, a significant reward following his impressive performance in his first season with the Cowboys in 2025.
Although the team and Pickens did not finalize a long-term contract, Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones reassured fans that they have no plans to trade the 25-year-old receiver ahead of the new season. It’s reassuring to see that level of commitment, right?
Prior to the NFL Draft last week, there had been whispers that Pickens was leaning towards signing the franchise tag. However, it wasn’t until April 29 that any official decision was made public.
Many expected negotiations for a long-term deal, especially with team owner Jerry Jones mentioning plans for Pickens during the NFL’s annual meeting. If you’re a fan, it probably seemed like a good sign.
The franchise tag now serves as a sort of safety net while hoping for a long-term agreement to be reached before the season kicks off. Yet, the Cowboys have made it clear they won’t engage in long-term negotiations with players tagged in this way prior to the July 15 deadline.
Given this understanding, Pickens opted to accept the guaranteed amount of $27.3 million.
The Cowboys made a wise choice in acquiring Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers last offseason, which has proven successful despite the team not making the playoffs in head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s inaugural year. Acquiring talent like Pickens often pays off in unexpected ways.
In his debut season, Pickens excelled, earning a spot as a second-team All-Pro. He finished with 93 receptions, racking up 1,429 yards and scoring nine touchdowns across 17 games.
Clearly, the Cowboys’ passing attack showcased a level of efficiency that made them one of the most formidable in the league, especially with other standout players like CeeDee Lamb, tight end Jake Ferguson, and breakout star Ryan Flournoy contributing to that success.
Speaking of Lamb, he recently secured a lucrative four-year contract valued at $136 million, making him the fourth-highest-paid receiver in the NFL.
As the Cowboys move forward, they recognize the caliber of talent they have in both Pickens and Lamb. However, indulging in hefty contracts for two top-tier receivers adds its own set of challenges. With the franchise tag, Pickens now stands as the 15th highest-paid receiver entering the 2026 season.
