George Russell’s Position at Mercedes Remains Steady Amidst Speculation
George Russell isn’t losing sleep over his future at Mercedes, even with the buzz surrounding his situation in Formula 1.
Recently, the spotlight has been on Max Verstappen, particularly whispers about a surprising shift from Red Bull to Mercedes. However, the narrative seems to be changing a bit. In an interview with Austrian outlet ORF earlier this week, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff highlighted that the team’s “priority” is to have both Russell and Kimi Antonelli driving next season. When Russell spoke to the media before the Belgian Grand Prix on Thursday, he made it clear that he wasn’t worried about his contract status.
“In response to questions about his contract, which is signed until 2026, Russell stated,
“I won’t lose sleep over it. As I’ve mentioned before, the best thing you can do is focus on driving. Obviously, there are discussions happening, but there’s nothing to announce yet.”
This season has been strong for Russell, who currently ranks fourth in the championship standings, trailing Verstappen by just 18 points. He has achieved five podium finishes, including a victory at the Canadian Grand Prix last month.
This likely provides him with a sense of stability.
“I’m not really looking at other options right now. Mercedes manages my career, so they’re deciding my future, but I’m focused on my work. I contribute significantly to the team’s points, so they want me just as much as I want to be here.”
“People seem more worried about my future than I am. Honestly, there’s nothing to be concerned about. I believe there will be a place for me in Formula 1 next season—no doubt about that.”
These remarks come amid ongoing speculation about his role at Mercedes. Today, a German outlet reported that Russell is nearing a contract extension with Mercedes, potentially reaching an agreement during the break between the British and Belgian Grands Prix.
However, F1 insider Erik Van Haren mentioned that the possibility of Verstappen moving to Mercedes in 2026 is still on the table.
We might find out more soon.
For now, though, Russell appears to be sleeping quite well.
