George Russell remains unconcerned amid speculation about his F1 future

Formula 1 Driver Market Heats Up for 2026 Season

The 2025 Formula 1 season is underway, and alongside the races, the driver market is buzzing with activity. Looking ahead, there are some drivers without contracts for the 2026 season, which will see Cadillac joining the lineup as the 11th team. As speculation grows, the atmosphere is getting quite tense.

One notable driver currently without a contract is George Russell, recently crowned the winner of a race.

Russell, alongside his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, is signed for the 2025 season. After his win at the Canadian Grand Prix, he expressed confidence in securing his spot for next season, stating that he’s “trusting” Mercedes and isn’t anxious about his future.

“I’ve said it many times, I’m not worried at all next year,” Russell remarked after his victory in Montreal when asked about his contract. “I know I’m going to be on the grid next year. I feel like I’m driving more than ever. I still think there’s more in me.”

He added, “I feel ready to compete for the World Championships. Results like today are reminiscent of Bahrain this year; whenever we get the opportunity for a good result, we seize it.”

The rumors surrounding Max Verstappen’s potential move to Mercedes have intensified, especially since Lewis Hamilton indicated he might leave for Ferrari this season. A recent report from Autosport highlighted that Verstappen, currently third in the drivers’ championship, has a clause in his contract that allows him to exit the team if he doesn’t rank in the top four by the end of June.

Russell made it clear that every team should be keen on Verstappen. “There were no hard feelings in discussions, especially regarding Max,” he explained. “I’ve said it many times—why wouldn’t teams be interested in him? If drivers are still looking for contracts for next year, Max would be the first choice for all teams.”

There are also whispers about Russell potentially moving to Aston Martin. However, he dismissed those claims, reinforcing his desire to remain with Mercedes. “No, I’m not in talks with other teams. I’ve been open about wanting to stay with Mercedes. They gave me my chance to enter Formula 1, and I’m loyal to them,” Russell noted.

Ultimately, Russell, alongside Antonelli, believes Mercedes is making significant strides. He currently stands fourth in the drivers’ championship, with four podium finishes, including his win in Canada. Antonelli also achieved his first podium there, becoming the third youngest in F1 history to do so, trailing only Lance Stroll and Verstappen.

“At the end of the day, every race team has two seats. I knew my position wouldn’t be at risk as long as I kept performing well, so I feel secure,” Russell mentioned.

“We’re not rushing into contract negotiations; our focus is on winning together, especially since we’re teammates now. We aim for solid results for both of us, like we did today.”

“Why would you want to change what’s already working for you?”
