Former Representative George Santos (R-N.Y.), who has faced significant controversy, took to social media on Saturday to express his gratitude towards President Donald Trump for commuting his prison sentence. He mentioned he was genuinely touched by the “kindness” and “generosity” shown by the president.
President Trump made the announcement about Santos’ commutation late Friday, ordering his immediate release from a federal prison in New Jersey, where he had been serving a seven-year sentence related to wire fraud and grand identity theft.
In a lengthy post on X, Santos reflected on his faith and his appreciation for Trump. He wrote, “Yesterday I was given something I never thought I’d get again: a true second chance at life. First and foremost, I would like to thank our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who has never forsaken me. . . . I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to President Donald J. Trump.”
Santos shared that he had a private conversation with Trump earlier on Saturday, describing it as unforgettable.
“President Trump has reminded us that no mistake, no hardship, no fall from grace can take away the possibility of renewal in this country we love so much,” Santos stated. He added that Trump’s belief in second chances had reignited his own hope, for which he is “forever grateful.”
Additionally, Santos thanked his supporters and mentioned that he plans to focus on prison reform, inspired by a recent peace deal between Israel and Hamas that Trump facilitated.
“Inspired by President Trump’s commitment to peace in the Middle East, I am committed to doing good and building bridges, not walls,” he said. He emphasized his dedication to ensuring that the justice system respects the dignity and humanity of all individuals involved.
In another turn, Santos accused staff at the Federal Correctional Facility in Fairton, New Jersey, of mistreatment. He noted, “No one should ever be dehumanized or degraded as I was by FCI Director Faliton Kelly and Assistant Director Nobile.” He expressed his ambition to make his past experiences meaningful by advocating for a justice system that genuinely believes in rehabilitation.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social about the commutation, described Santos as “a villain in some ways,” yet contended that his sentence was excessive. Trump noted, “At least Santos always had the courage, conviction and intelligence to vote Republican! George has been in solitary confinement for an extended period of time and has suffered horrific abuse for all to see, which is why I have just signed a commutation of sentence that will release George Santos from prison effective immediately. Good luck, George, and have a great life!”
Santos had been sentenced to 87 months in April after pleading guilty to fraudulently collecting donations and stealing identities. He reported to FCI Fairton in July and served in Congress for nearly a year after being elected in 2022, only to be ousted by House members the following year.
As of now, FCI New Jersey has not provided a response regarding Santos’ accusations.
