George Santos Focuses on Prison Reform Following Sentence Reduction

Former Congressman George Santos from New York expressed his desire to make the most of his newfound freedom after receiving a seven-year commuted sentence last Friday. He’s turning his attention toward prison reform and aims not to let President Donald Trump down.

“It’s about doing the right thing. Moving forward—it’s about changing the ending of your life because you can’t go back and change the beginning,” Santos remarked during an appearance on *Hannity*.

He credited President Trump for granting him a second chance, stating he wants to leverage this opportunity to advocate for reforms within the prison system. “I want to help,” he added.

Initially sentenced in April to seven years and three months after admitting guilt in a scheme to mislead donors and improperly use personal information for campaign funds, Santos was recently granted an immediate release from a federal facility in New Jersey following Trump’s announcement.

In the interview, Santos offered an apology to his former constituents and expressed a desire to “start fresh” and demonstrate that he is committed to changing his path.

Santos acknowledged that he would not be required to pay back over $373,000 in restitution due to the commutation but indicated that he would seek ways to rectify his past wrongs.

He reflected, “The road to redemption lies in showing my serious intent to change. I’m aware of the criticisms. I’ve hurt many people and can accept that they have the right to be angry with me. It’s all my doing.”

Santos also highlighted the importance of taking responsibility, suggesting that true repentance involves recognizing one’s own mistakes. “I’m moving on and aiming to make the right choices,” he concluded.

In December 2023, Santos was expelled from the House of Representatives after a damaging ethics report, marking him as the sixth lawmaker in U.S. history to be removed from office. Reactions to his sentence reduction have varied; some view it as a compassionate move, while others remain critical.
