George Washington was not a deist: Uncovering the contemporary misconception about America's founders

Exploring the True Story of the American Revolution

Bestselling author and cultural commentator Eric Metaxas aimed to present the authentic narrative of the American Revolution in his latest book. “I just wanted to craft a fun, engaging story that really moves through our history,” he shared.

However, as Metaxas delved deeper, he uncovered several unexpected insights about our past.

One of the striking revelations pertained to George Washington, the first president. Many contemporary historians describe Washington as a deist, someone who believes in a remote God who created the universe but doesn’t interfere in human matters. Strikingly, these historians often argue that the United States was not founded as a Christian nation.

Metaxas dismisses the idea that Washington was a deist, calling it “foolish.”

“Washington was not a deist. It’s a ridiculous claim,” he insisted.

He elaborated, “The Founders were people of profound Christian conviction who aimed to emulate the Israelites in the wilderness—evading tyranny and looking solely to God.”

According to Metaxas, all the founding figures were aware that their mission was about integrating biblical principles into governance.

“I was genuinely struck by how distinctly Christian these events were. You can see it everywhere; it’s hard to miss,” he told Glenn, clarifying that while his book isn’t strictly a “Christian book,” it certainly chronicles an essential part of American history.

Glenn has also been working to debunk this misleading narrative for some time. “In this one letter from Washington, there are 24 different scriptural references, woven into his language seamlessly,” he noted.

He added, “Believing in miracles doesn’t fit into a deist worldview.”

Metaxas concurred, emphasizing, “It’s crucial for us to be aware of this.”

Despite his extensive research, Metaxas found a noticeable absence of literature that accurately captured the origins of America. This realization prompted him to publish Revolution: The Birth of the Greatest Nation in History just last month.

“This is a pivotal time,” he remarked. “We need to grasp how our government operates—understanding that our freedoms are derived from God.”
