George Whitby’s three goals lead St Helens to victory over Catalans Dragons

Not many teams feel the pressure to excel in rugby league quite like St. Helens. As one of the most successful clubs in the Super League, they have a long-standing standard to uphold, and any setbacks are met with intense scrutiny.

No one knows this pressure quite like Paul Wellens. As one of the Saints’ finest players turned head coach, he’s been under significant stress lately after experiencing playoff disappointment last season and facing challenges again early this year.

The recent victory against Catalans, while impressive, doesn’t necessarily mean that St. Helens are back in title contention. However, the team’s attitude in that match might just spark a turnaround for their season. A loss would have been devastating, and narrowly winning wouldn’t have cut it.

The team is nearing the close of an illustrious chapter, with key players like Alex Walmsley and Jonny Lomax, who helped secure four Grand Finals from 2019 to 2022. Yet, the echoes of those glory days were palpable as St. Helens dealt effectively with a perceived weaker opponent.

One of the bright spots in this scenario? The emergence of new talent from their renowned pipeline. Wellens’ greatest challenge this season has been to find a reliable offensive structure, but the young halfback, George Whitby, is certainly making a strong case for his place.

Whitby shone brightly, netting a remarkable hat trick, showcasing a composure that belies his youth. “He has the potential to reach great heights in this sport,” Wellens remarked. “I think people are really going to enjoy watching him.”

The first two goals he scored set the tone for a dominant first half for the Saints. Alongside contributions from Deon Cross and Walmsley, the halftime score of 24-0 left just a hint of criticism for Wellens, as some scoring opportunities remained untapped.

Even early on, it felt like they were well ahead of their competition. This match highlighted the struggles of a Dragons team missing several key players. With pressure mounting, coach Steve McNamara faces scrutiny as his team finds themselves at risk of finishing in the bottom half.

Despite the disappointing display, it was the first game since 2022 that they conceded more than 40 points. The Dragons, however, seemed to regain some form, with significant plays leading to another score shortly after the break.

The game culminated with Whitby capitalizing on an exceptional assist from Walmsley, sealing his first senior hat trick.

While it’s important not to overload this young talent with expectations, if Wellens and the Saints can harness this momentum and contend for the title, Whitby could play a pivotal role in that journey this season.
