Georgetown’s Ed Cooley to student heckler: ‘I’m rich as s–t’

Money makes it easy for Ed Cooley to lose.

Georgetown’s basketball coach poked fun at fans who mocked his team’s poor performance and high salary during Wednesday night’s road loss to Seton Hall by referring to his bank account.

A Pirates fan yelled at Cooley, “That’s $7 million per win.” According to the Asbury Park Press.

Cooley shot back with a smile.

“You know, I’m a wealthy mother,” Cooley replied. “I’m very rich.”

The $7 million statement refers to Cooley’s new salary as Hoyas head coach, Front Office Sports reports approaching $6 million.

The “per win” line was a reference to Georgetown’s 1-10 record in the Big East, ahead only of hapless DePaul.

Cooley said he was unfazed by the exchange after the 76-70 blowout, Georgetown’s seventh straight loss.

“Nothing touches me,” Cooley said, according to the Asbury Park Press. “Think about it: I coach in the Big East at Georgetown University. What could possibly get under my skin?”

Furthermore, he added: “Kids will always be kids. The problem is that adults don’t act like adults. When you’re a student, say whatever you want to say. I always try to have good communication with kids.” As you know, they are worth commenting from time to time. Why not have some fun with them? The match was already over, but you know what happens? They all have such a good laugh I was there.”

Cooley and the Hoyas will continue to be under attack until the program gets back on track.

Georgetown, once the standard-bearer of the Big East, has been irrelevant for years, but hopes Cooley can help turn their fortunes around, much like he did with Providence and Fairfield.

The Hoyas lured Cooley with a high salary and ruffled feathers in the Big East. His team has a good record this year with 8 wins and 14 losses.

Cooley continues to insist that better days are ahead even as the losses pile up, with another daunting game on the horizon Saturday when No. 1 University heads to Washington, D.C. .
