Georgia's former lieutenant governor has been officially expelled from the state's Republican Party after supporting Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
On Monday, party leaders announced Former Lt. Gov. Jeff Duncan said he was unanimously removed from office after his term was “marred by embarrassment and scandal in just one term,” including a series of allegations aimed at undermining Republicans.
Duncan, who served as second-in-command from 2019 to 2023 and served in the state House of Representatives from 2013 to 2017, claimed in a party resolution that he campaigned “as a pro-conservative Trump.” However, once in office, he “openly attempted to undermine and sabotage” the candidacies of other Georgia Republicans, including current Lt. Gov. Bert Jones and U.S. Senate candidate Herschel Walker.
The party said Mr Duncan also had a troubled history with the truth. He allegedly “falsely” implied that he had the support of then-President Donald Trump. He also claimed that he graduated from Georgia Tech, played in the major leagues as a member of the Miami Marlins, and was a “successful businessman.''
“Jeff Duncan has clearly decided to join the Democratic Party, especially the more extreme elements of the Democratic Party.”
Mr. Duncan also made no bones about his opposition to President Trump in 2024. Not only has he endorsed President Joe Biden and Biden's successor, Kamala Harris, but he also spoke at the Democratic National Committee in August, telling voters:throw away playing cards. ”
Voters in Georgia and across the country didn't heed his cries, but now that Trump is on the verge of becoming president again, the Georgia Republican Party has officially cut ties with Duncan.
The resolution would ban Duncan from all party property and events and prevent him from running as a Republican in Georgia. Past endorsements he received from the party when he ran for state representative and lieutenant governor will also be rescinded.
“Jeff Duncan is no longer a Republican,” Josh McCoon, chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, said in a statement. WSB TV. “Jeff Duncan has clearly decided to work with the Democratic Party, especially the extreme elements of the Democratic Party.”
The resolution asks Mr. Duncan to refrain from calling himself a Republican, and Mr. McCoon asked news outlets to characterize Mr. Duncan as an “ostracized Republican.”
Mr Duncan responded by retweeting his expulsion resolution, writing: “For a party with limited time to consider mass deportations, world peace, and global tariffs, I cannot believe this is a good use of time. Learn how to take a victory lap without setting the dumpster on fire @JoshMcKoon.”
