A Georgia inmate was shot and killed inside a hospital Tuesday night after pepper spraying a guard and then charging at a second man, authorities said.
Inmate Jacob Henson was being treated at about 8:45 p.m. after he was stabbed during an altercation with one of the state correctional officers who was accompanying him to the hospital during a scuffle inside the Washington state prison. This was revealed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Henson, 31, overpowered the officer, grabbed the guard’s canister of pepper spray, and released gas to “incapacitate” him, authorities said.
The GBI said Henson continued to use the spray and attempted to confront another correctional officer, who shot and killed him.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The National Police Agency said it is investigating the use of deadly force by correctional officers and is also looking into an earlier incident in which Henson was stabbed inside the prison.
“Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Middle Judicial Circuit Attorney’s Office for review,” the agency said.
Henson was serving an eight-year prison sentence on 25 criminal charges. This was previously disclosed by the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office. He was also sentenced to an additional 12 years of probation after serving time in prison.
He had a history of vehicle theft and other criminal activity in the summer of 2018 before his arrest and subsequent guilty plea.
