A man charged in connection with a series of shootings that resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a Homeland Security officer who was walking his dog near Atlanta, died in jail on Tuesday night, according to officials.
Olaolukitan Adon Abel, aged 26, was found unresponsive in his cell, as reported by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
Despite efforts to revive the U.S. Navy veteran, he was later declared dead.
While an official cause of death has yet to be established, authorities do not suspect foul play and are carrying out an internal investigation.
Adon Abel faces accusations of killing Prianna Weathers, 31, and DHS Inspector Lauren Bliss, 40, during last week’s incident.
Additionally, law enforcement is pursuing further murder charges against Tony Matthews, 49, who succumbed to injuries from the attack over the weekend.
No potential motive for the shooting has been disclosed so far.
It remains unclear if Adon Abel was acquainted with any of the victims; police indicated that at least one was likely targeted at random.
His roommates mentioned to reporters that just before the shooting, Adon Abel had a heated dispute regarding the air conditioning in their shared home, leading him to leave the house abruptly.
Abel shared the residence with six other individuals in different units.
Originally from England, he became a U.S. citizen in 2022 while serving in the Navy stationed in San Diego.
The shootings captured the attention of the Trump administration, with Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin expressing concern about Adon Abel receiving citizenship under President Biden’s administration.
Mullin referenced Adon Abel’s past criminal charges, although it’s uncertain whether these incidents occurred before he became a citizen.
