Georgia overwhelms Ole Miss, moves closer to the SEC championship game and a place in the College Football Playoff

There was plenty at stake when No. 2 Georgia met No. 12 Ole Miss on Saturday, but before kickoff, the coaches were just as generous with their praise for each other. Georgia’s Kirby Smart said Pete Golding had done a tremendous job, while the Ole Miss coach described Smart and his staff as college football’s “gold standard.”

On the field, though, Georgia took control early. The Bulldogs led 7-0 after the first quarter, were up 28-0 at halftime and stretched the margin to 35-0 in the third. They went on to win 42-7 in Oxford, giving Ole Miss its largest home defeat since losing 62-7 to Alabama in 2018.

Frustration among the home crowd surfaced late in the first half. With Ole Miss trailing 21-0, officials called pass interference on the Rebels, and some fans threw bottles and other debris onto the field.

Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton threw four touchdown passes in the first three quarters. Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss had no touchdown passes and was intercepted once. Running back Shekai Mills-Knight finally got the Rebels on the scoreboard with an 8-yard run with just under 11 minutes left, making it 35-7.

Georgia’s run game had also helped take pressure off Stockton this season. Nate Frazier, Dwight Phillips Jr. and Bo Walker had combined for 19 touchdowns before Saturday, while Stockton had thrown for more than 1,600 yards and 17 touchdowns. Frazier added 107 rushing yards against Ole Miss.

Both programs had been among the SEC’s most successful since 2023, and each came into the matchup with a productive quarterback, though their approaches differed. Georgia has two conference games left. Missouri visits Athens next week, while Ole Miss travels to Norman to face Oklahoma in Week 11.
