Georgia rep moves to impeach DA Fani Willis

Georgia lawmakers on Friday introduced a resolution to impeach embattled Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

State Rep. Charice Byrd (R-Woodstock) said Willis used his office “not for the sake of justice but for political gain” in prosecuting former President Donald Trump and others over election interference. He said that

Additionally, the Georgia Senate voted Friday to authorize the creation of a committee to investigate possible misconduct by Willis, who was accused of having an affair with the special counsel appointed to oversee the Trump case.

The committee has the power to compel the testimony of key witnesses and subpoena records.

Byrd accused Willis of violating the First Amendment by going after conservatives and indicting them for scrutinizing the 2020 election results.

Byrd diagnosed the state attorney's office with “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and Nathan Wade, who is also accused of using funds paid by the county to take Willis on romantic luxury leisure trips. Willis was accused of a potential conflict of interest in light of his alleged relationship with

Mr. Wade was paid $654,000 for his work on the defense team, according to documents obtained by Mr. Trump's co-defendant and former White House aide Michael Roman.

“Fanny Willis has a long list of potential conflicts that make her unfit and unfit to serve as Fulton County district attorney,” Byrd said. “A person elected to that office is expected to abide by the law and not weaponize that office for political gain. From the first day Fani Willis was elected, Fani Willis is expected to abide by the law and not weaponize that office for political gain. It has embarrassed the justice system.”

Divorce filings filed by Wade's now estranged wife, Joycelyn, allege that Wade and Willis continued an affair that included ostentatious trips to San Francisco and Miami.

Mr. Roman filed a motion to disqualify Mr. Willis' firm from the case and asked that the case be vacated entirely. Mr. Trump's lawyers have since signed on to the effort, and yesterday accused Mr. Willis of “racial bias” in a motion seeking to be removed from the case.

Meanwhile, Willis, Nathan and others will be subpoenaed to testify at a special hearing ordered by the judge overseeing election interference cases, people familiar with the matter told CNN.

Wade's current and former law partners told the outlet they had been told they would be called to the stand at some point.

“We have a lot of information. We have a lot of documents and a lot of witnesses,” Roman's defense attorney Ashley Merchant told CNN.

Willis stopped short of admitting the affair, calling Wade a “friend” and a “superstar” in the eyes of the law, but the judge gave him until February 2 to submit a formal response to the allegations in writing. It is ordered.

Willis is likely to fight the subpoena and is already trying to avoid a deposition in Wade's ongoing divorce case.

Wade filed for divorce from Joycelyn on November 1, 2021, just one day after being hired by Willis.
