Sen. Jon Ossoff Advocates for AI Governance
Senator Jon Ossoff, a Democrat from Georgia, is calling for a more structured international approach to artificial intelligence (AI). At a recent rally in Athens, Ossoff, who is aiming for reelection and may have presidential aspirations for 2028, suggested that the U.S. should take the lead in establishing an “AI treaty” to manage the potential dangers posed by rapidly advancing technology.
Ossoff stated, “A capable president would act quickly to secure and reassure the American public. We should send inspectors to the forefront of research, strengthen the nation against threats like bioterrorism, urge Congress for necessary legislation, and guide the world towards a treaty on AI.” He went on to criticize the current administration, claiming that “President Trump is compromised,” and voiced that Congress should be actively investigating and legislating on the matter. “But instead, they’re just sitting back and hoping for the best,” he added.
As discussions about AI become increasingly prominent—especially with midterm elections approaching—former President Barack Obama has urged Democrats to place the topic at the forefront of their agenda. Tech leaders, including Elon Musk and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have suggested that the AI industry should slow down to implement appropriate safety measures.
On the Republican side, there’s a belief that the U.S. must proceed cautiously while still maintaining leadership in AI development to prevent adversarial nations like China from gaining a competitive edge.
The Trump administration has consistently rejected the idea of global governance concerning AI, asserting that individual nations should retain control to meet their specific needs and interests. Michael Kratsios, the Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, emphasized that prioritizing AI for a nation’s populace does not require joining futile international efforts that could undermine national self-determination.
He stated, “It does not mean creating a regulatory framework that sacrifices a country’s ability to innovate for the comfort of technocrats. Prioritizing AI means fostering a sovereign AI capability for your nation right now.”
In regards to concerns about AI’s possible threats to society, Trump expressed his view: “Whoever wins AI, wins.” He insisted that the U.S. needs a “strong and smart president” to monitor AI developments and reiterated that his administration has already prevented harmful actions related to AI.
Ossoff criticized Congress for being ill-equipped to handle the challenges posed by AI, calling it an “ancient establishment barely capable of email” that is sleepwalking into a technological revolution, while the current president disregards the seriousness of the matter. He expressed his desire to leave a safer world for his children, stating, “I refuse to leave my girls a world as dark and dangerous as this one threatens to become.”
Ossoff, who was first elected in 2021 and finds himself in a contested race against Republican Mike Collins, is facing a challenging political environment. Polls indicate that the Georgia Senate race is very close, with Ossoff currently holding an average lead of about 7.8 points, according to RealClear Polling.
