The Apalachee High School sophomore said he thought he might have stopped to go to the bathroom just before gunshots rang out in the hallway, and that if he had, “I probably would have been dead by now.”
A distraught 10th-grader said he considered leaving his classroom just before suspected shooter Colt Gray, 14, opened fire at his northeast Georgia school Wednesday morning, killing four people and wounding nine.
“I was trying to go to the toilet just before it happened. I'm so glad I didn't because if I had I would be dead by now.” The 10th grader told 11Alive.his name is not written.
Just seconds later, students heard gunshots nearby.
“I heard gunshots and my teacher told me to hide in a corner. I heard screams and police saying 'Get down!'” he recalled the terrifying scene.
While he was able to get to safety, he knew several people who didn't escape the gunfire unscathed.
“I know my teacher, he was shot. I know one of my friend's friends was shot in the leg,” the 10th grade student told the outlet.
The four victims were identified as teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, Christina Irimy, 53, and students Mason Schermerhorn, 14, and Christian Angulo, 14.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Gray turned himself in to officers at the scene and was taken into custody.
He allegedly used an AR-15 style weapon.
Authorities say Gray has been charged with murder and will be tried as an adult.
He was previously under investigation by the FBI for making online school shooting threats.
According to an FBI statement, Gray's father told investigators at the time that there were hunting guns in the home, but claimed his son never had access to them unsupervised.
