The Auburn Tigers faced a controversial moment during their game against the 10th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday night, particularly in the second quarter.
Tigers quarterback Jackson Arnold attempted a sneak into the end zone, but linebacker Raylen Wilson managed to knock the ball loose just before Arnold could reach the goal line.
A Georgia player picked up the fumble in hopes of returning it for a touchdown, but that effort fell flat. Officials ruled that Arnold had indeed fumbled prior to crossing into the end zone. This decision visibly angered Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze, and Auburn’s Athletic Director John Cohen was seen arguing with officials as the teams headed to halftime.
This incident ignited a flurry of discussions on social media.
After the game, Freeze shared his thoughts about the fumble, saying, “You just have to destroy the plane with the tip of the ball. It didn’t turn out the way we expected.”
If Arnold had scored, it would have given the Tigers a 16-0 lead, but instead, that turnover fueled Georgia’s comeback. The Bulldogs dominated after that, scoring 20 unanswered points and ultimately winning 20-10.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart commented, “It’s a story of two halves. Our kids never quit. I’m just as proud of this team as probably any other team.”
In terms of stats, Arnold completed 19 of 31 passes for 137 yards, adding 55 rushing yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Auburn gained a total of 278 yards but racked up 11 penalties costing them 103 yards.
Freeze acknowledged the team’s struggles, stating, “It’s clear that we’re finding ways to not win football games, and that has to change. That locker room is a good enough football team to play and win games.”
On the other side, Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 24 of 37 passes for 217 yards, also securing a rushing touchdown. Teammate Chauncey Bowens added another rush touchdown to the scoreboard.
With this victory, Georgia improved to 5 wins and 1 loss, while Auburn fell to 3-3.
