Georgia transfer Ja'Marley Riddle taken into custody for drug and speeding offenses

Georgia Football Player Arrested

Ja Marley Riddle has added his name to the growing list of Georgia football players facing legal issues during Kirby Smart’s tenure as head coach.

The 19-year-old was taken into custody on May 8, facing a felony charge for possession of a controlled substance, alongside a misdemeanor for speeding. As reported by WGIG 98.7 FM, this situation unfolded when an undercover officer in Glynn County spotted Riddle’s vehicle weaving through traffic at almost 100 mph, prompting a marked unit to pull him over.

Riddle now confronts felony charges related to the purchase, possession, or distribution of marijuana, as well as selling a controlled substance classified as Schedule I or II.

According to a Georgia State spokesperson, the university is aware of the situation and is conducting an investigation but has chosen not to make further comments at this time.

After his arrest, Riddle was able to post bail for all charges.

It’s worth noting that the vehicle was reportedly going 95 mph during the stop. The officer on the scene described Riddle as being noticeably nervous and shaking when he handed over his driver’s license. The police report noted a strong smell of marijuana coming from the car, which led the officer to ask Riddle to exit while they continued their investigation.

Throughout the encounter, Riddle was described as “kind and courteous,” according to the police report.

When asked about the presence of marijuana, Riddle denied it and allowed officers to search the vehicle. Ultimately, they discovered a large heat-seal bag in a backpack in the back seat, containing various packages labeled as marijuana and electronic cigarettes identified as containing THC.

Riddle is set to enter his third season in college football in 2026, having previously played at East Carolina University, where he recorded 133 tackles, 10 pass deflections, and six interceptions.

Transitioning to Georgia State is seen as a significant move toward establishing a stronger football program. However, it’s highlighted that the team has been in the spotlight lately due to numerous players encountering legal troubles.

Since 2023, at least 26 members of the Georgia football program have reportedly faced arrests, including Riddle. Notably, Jalen Carter was arrested in 2023 on charges of street racing and reckless driving following a tragic crash that resulted in the deaths of staff member Chandler LeCroy and offensive lineman Devin Willock.
