Victim of Chemical Attack in Savannah Recovering

A woman injured in a chemical attack while walking in Forsyth Park, Savannah, is on the mend. The incident took place near West Wartburg Avenue and Whitaker Avenue when Ashley Wasilewski felt someone approach her from behind and spray an unknown substance, as reported. By Friday, she mentioned that she did not recognize the assailant.

A neighbor, who rushed to help upon hearing Wasilewski’s screams, noted that her clothing was partially melted, and even her keys showed signs of corrosion. Due to the severity of her burns, doctors have indicated that she will require skin grafts.

According to her family, Wasilewski was simply walking home after attending church when the attack occurred. Savannah Police Department Deputy Chief Robert Gavin stated that the investigation is ongoing, being labeled as an “acid attack.” The police are receiving assistance from both the FBI and ATF.

A social media post by Savannah Police shared an image of a man dressed in dark clothing who they are trying to identify in connection with the incident. They clarified that this individual is not currently a suspect in any crime but is considered a “person of interest.” Citizens with information are encouraged to reach out to CrimeStoppers.

Mayor Van Johnson, commenting on the situation, noted that no arrests have been made yet. Wasilewski is currently being treated at the Georgia Burn Center for third-degree burns.

Her best friend, Connor Milam, expressed deep concern regarding the traumatic experience. According to Milam, Wasilewski felt a presence close to her and reacted instinctively, only to discover too late that it was a harmful substance causing her burns. Another local resident expressed their disbelief, citing their frequent walks in the park as they never expected such violence there.

Community leaders, including Mayor Johnson, mentioned that efforts are underway to ensure police have the resources they need to address this incident swiftly. They also encouraged the community to remain alert and supportive as the investigation continues.
