Georgia’s Kirby Smart on CFP selection committee’s ‘unjust’ criteria: ‘Don’t know what they’re looking for’

The third edition of the College Football Playoff rankings was released Tuesday night.

The Oregon Ducks remained in first place. Ohio State, Texas, Penn State and Indiana rounded out the top five. Georgia, which hoisted the College Football Playoff national championship trophy in 2021 and 2022, was picked 10th.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart recently appeared to take issue with the Bulldogs' ranking. Mr. Smart expressed clear dissatisfaction during a recent media session, suggesting the selection committee lacked transparency regarding its criteria.

“It's difficult because you don't know what they want,” Smart said via On3 Sports. “They can't define it, and it's not simple. I mean, anybody can sit on that committee and say, 'This is what we want. This is our standard. There's a lot of overlap with things. Everyone argues about it, but I don't have the time to waste energy on it.”

2024 College Football Playoff Odds: Favors Oregon. Texas, Georgia tied

Georgia has played one of the toughest schedules in the country this season. The Bulldogs are off to play against Alabama, Texas and Ole Miss. The Longhorns were the No. 1 team in the nation when they played Georgia.

Smart argued that the opponents a team faces should be seriously considered when the committee makes its evaluation. He also said the selection committee's criteria were “unreasonable”.

“So I think it’s not just non-conference games and who you play,” Smart said. “It seems unfair to me to rate someone as having the third-best defense or someone having the fifth-best defense.

“Well, don't you think their defense is affected by who plays on offense? And how much did they play in the top offense? Because last time I checked, our offense and defense were All-American. Because I've played top offenses and defenses, if I play a top game, I don't rank higher than if I play a low ranking game. That's what fascinates me.

“They talk about the eye test. How do you play in a match? Well, how you play in a match depends on whether you play at home or away, where you play and who you play against. Those are the No. 1 two indicators of how you play, it's who you're playing against and who you're facing that matters, but if they actually I don't know if this applies to you. Look at the big picture again How you play depends on who plays. ”
