Gérard Depardieu found guilty of sexual assault and given a suspended sentence

French actor Gérard Depardieu has received an 18-month suspended prison sentence after a Paris court found him guilty of sexual assault against two women on the set of a film. He was also fined €29,040 (around $32,350) and will be required to register in the national sex offenders database.

The 76-year-old was convicted in connection with incidents involving a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant during the filming of “Les Volets Vers” (The Green Shotters). This case has been seen as significant in the ongoing discussion around sexual misconduct in the French film industry, particularly regarding prominent figures.

In 2018, Depardieu faced charges of rape and sexual assault but denied the allegations. He did not attend the recent court hearing, and his lawyer announced plans to appeal the verdict.

“This is a victory for two women and, I would argue, a victory for all women,” remarked Carine Durrieu Diebolt, the lawyer for the set dresser. She emphasized the need to end the immunity that artists often enjoy in the film industry. The court’s decision has firmly established that he cannot be viewed as innocent regarding these actions.

Numerous Accusations

Depardieu, who claims to have starred in over 250 films, has had a celebrated yet controversial career. He received an Oscar nomination in 1991 and is renowned for his role as Cyrano de Bergerac. Over the years, he has faced allegations from more than 20 women; however, only some cases have advanced through the courts due to various legal barriers.

During the trial, Depardieu declined to file any counterclaims, stating simply, “Not.” While he acknowledged using vulgar language and had engaged in some physical interactions, he denied any sexual intent behind his actions.

The court, which included three judges, found his explanations to be lacking credibility, contrasting sharply with the consistent testimonies from the accusers. Furthermore, the court noted that the defense strategies utilized may have further harmed the victims, warranting the increased fines imposed on Depardieu.

Accusers’ Testimonies

The set dresser recounted experiencing unwanted advances, including being grabbed inappropriately. She illustrated her allegations in court, describing how he had touched her without consent. Another accuser, an assistant, similarly described multiple incidents of being groped while on set.

“I feel deeply moved,” the set dresser said after the ruling. “I’m really pleased with this outcome. It feels like a significant step forward for justice.”

Support from Peers

Despite the verdict, some in the French film community have rallied behind Depardieu, including other actors who attended his court sessions. Reports indicated that he was recently working on a film directed by Fanny Ardant in Portugal.

Additional legal challenges may still await him; a separate case stemming from 2018 remains active, involving allegations of rape by another actress. Throughout his lengthy career, Depardieu has been a prominent figure in French cinema, known for his diverse roles and complex characters, though his behavior towards women has come under closer examination in light of recent revelations.
