French actor Gerard Despardou is on trial on Monday in Paris, where he was accused of sexually assaulting two women while filming the 2021 film.
Depardieu, 76, faces accusations of exploring a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant director while making the film “Les Volets Vers” (The Green Shotters).
Prosecutors argue that the case contains indecent comments and inappropriate emotionality. This includes the incident in which Despardieu allegedly locked up one of the women before exploring her in front of the other crew.
Both women filed formal complaints. Their identity has not been revealed to protect allegedly victims of sexual assault.
The actor denies the fee.
In an open letter published in Le Figaro in October 2023, Depardou wrote:
The trial was originally scheduled for October 2024, but was postponed due to Depardou's health.
His lawyer, Jeremy Asas, said the actor suffered from quadruple heart bypass and suffered from diabetes.
A court-appointed medical expert found him worthy of endurance.
He is expected to attend the two-day hearing, and reportedly there will be a scheduled break.
This is the first time Depardieu, one of France's most well-known film actors, has gone to trial over allegations of sexual assault.
He was previously accused of fraud by around 20 women, but no other lawsuits have advanced to court.
Some have been withdrawn due to lack of evidence and restrictions.
The court is expected to hear witness testimony during trial. The verdict is not expected anytime soon.
