German Prime Minister Merz Talks Trade and Tariffs in Washington

German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz recently stated that President Donald Trump’s tariffs pose a significant threat to Germany’s economy. During his visit to the United States on Thursday, Merz emphasized his belief that free trade and open markets are key to mutual prosperity.

In a discussion on Fox News’ Special Report, Merz addressed various pressing issues, including Elon Musk’s recent commentary. Musk’s remarks surfaced amid his public disagreements with the president, which drew attention.

While foreign leaders often refrain from discussing domestic matters, Merz expressed his concern, describing the tariffs as a form of “blackmail.” He added that Germany is actively seeking solutions to counter this challenge.

“Free trade and open markets are, we believe, essential for the mutual wealth of our nations and our continent,” Merz shared. He noted the necessity for negotiations between the U.S. government and the European Commission, highlighting Germany’s role within Europe and voicing his perspective on the issue.

Trump has implemented a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and parts, alongside a temporary 10% tariff, which was reduced from 20%. Reflecting on the tariffs, Merz remarked, “We should find a way to overcome them.”

Although Trump insists that his ultimate goal is an open market, he maintains that it must occur only if America receives fair treatment from its trading partners.

As a member of the European Union, Germany enforces a 10% tariff on most American automobile imports.
